Miri, 10 November 2025 – Karuna (Sarawak) Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. proudly announces the successful launch of the Sarawak Smart Transport App (SSTA), milestone achievement in Sarawak’s journey towards data-driven and sustainable public mobility.
Developed locally by Karuna, the SSTA represents a major step forward in the State’s digital transformation for transport, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. The initiative is fully funded and developed by Karuna, with Miri City Bus Sdn. Bhd. becoming the first operator to adopt the SSTA platform for its Smart Bus Services in Miri.
The launch ceremony, officiated by YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister for Transport Sarawak, marked a significant milestone in realizing Sarawak’s vision for a connected, intelligent, and people-centered mobility ecosystem.
Empowering Bus Operators with IoT and Data-Driven Technology
At the core of the SSTA is Karuna’s Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, integrating GPS routers for real-time tracking and people-counting cameras for passenger analytics. These tools are provided through a subscription-based model, enabling bus operators to access, manage, and upgrade their systems without heavy upfront investment.
This model ensures long-term sustainability while promoting inclusive digital adoption across operators of all scales. Through this platform, Karuna provides:
- Real-time fleet visibility and route monitoring through the SSTA dashboard.
- Automated ridership analytics for data-informed route planning.
- Seamless data reporting in compliance with MOTS requirements.
- Public app visibility that enhances commuter trust and convenience.
By bridging operations and data analytics, Karuna’s solution transforms traditional bus operations into connected, data-driven services, improving both service delivery and decision-making for the transport sector.
Smart Mobility for the People
The SSTA mobile app, is now available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, aiming to empower commuters to plan their journeys with ease, providing live bus locations, estimated arrival times (ETA), and real-time route information.
Future upgrades will include an integrated Bus Payment Terminal and reloadable transport card, streamlining digital fare collection and enabling a cashless mobility experience.
Through SSTA, the Ministry of Transport Sarawak gains access to actionable ridership data, allowing for evidence-based policy-making, route optimization, and service efficiency across divisions, all powered by Karuna’s technology infrastructure.
A Homegrown Solution with Global Potential
The SSTA underscores Sarawak’s growing technological capabilities and Karuna’s leadership in delivering world-class Smart City and IoT solutions. Built entirely in Sarawak, the platform exemplifies how local innovation can drive global-standard outcomes in mobility, sustainability, and digital governance.
By combining data intelligence, cashless convenience, and IoT-driven transparency, the SSTA positions Sarawak as a model for smart mobility in the ASEAN region, advancing the State’s vision of a greener, more connected future.
